The best thing for young marketers to grow their skills and careers is to have a source of useful information and mentorship.

Unfortunately, most of the material they teach about marketing in college is very much outdated. Young marketers that enter the job world after college are at a severe disadvantage right out the gate and have to resort to learning on the job.

Being a sponge and absorbing information about the industry is a great best practice to become a better marketer. During the development of my marketing career, I resorted to reading lots of content and subscribing to newsletters.

I’ve tried using different sources for information, some were good, and some I began to outgrow when I developed baseline knowledge on their presenting subject.

Currently, I have a mix of four newsletters that I’ve been referring to for marketing news and catching up on best practices in the industry. These outlets will also serve new marketers in the game.

Marketing Millennials

Marketing Millennial Newsletter

I stumbled on the Marketing Millennials brand through my LinkedIn feed. Some of my connections were sharing very funny marketing memes from this account. I subscribed and gave their newsletter a shot. So far, I have been very impressed.

The Marketing Millennial newsletter is a like your marketing best friend checking in with you twice a week. It skews more towards a younger generation of marketers but provides very excellent insights.

A major component of their newsletter comes from their podcast (found on Spotify, also worth a listen) which features interviews with the best young marketers and picks their brains on topics ranging from copywriting, marketing operations, and much more.

My favorite part of the Marketing Millennial newsletter is their swipe file section where they go through examples of marketing and provide excellent insights on why these examples work and how you can implement them into your marketing.

Hubspot Marketing Newsletter

Hubspot Marketing Newsletter

This one is a no-brainer. Hubspot is a brand that should be known by every marketer. They wrote the book on implementing an inbound marketing philosophy.

Their newsletter alongside the content featured on their blog is very helpful to all marketers. If you think of a question, Hubspot probably has an answer to it. They have articles related to inbound marketing, social media, marketing strategy, and much more.

The thing that separates them from the rest is the state of marketing reports and other useful data sets that they publish from time to time. Hubspot is my go-to source to figure out industry benchmarks and help me discover the lay of the land in the marketing world.

It’s a must-follow for all marketers regardless of whether it’s your first day on the job or if you’re a CMO of a multi-million dollar company.

Really Good Emails

Really Good Emails Newsletter

This is a must-subscribe if you want to have a career in email marketing.

One of my favorite websites for inspiration has a very insightful newsletter about email marketing

Really Good Emails is a website that contains visual examples of email marketing. You can get inspiration from newsletters, abandoned cart messages, sale emails, and so much more from top companies in the world. What’s even better about this site is that it’s free and at your disposal at any time. You can save emails for later or take a deeper dive into the coding of the email to see how it is technically set up.

The Really Good Email newsletter is a weekly newsletter that walks you through the latest updates in email marketing. It takes articles from the major players in email marketing like Litmus, SendGrid, and so much more. You can learn about perfecting the best subject lines, or how to nail your next sale email.

All the content in the email is put together in a visually pleasing email. Their newsletter themes are quite catchy as well, for example, they had a newsletter dedicated to lyrics from The Beatles songs as their subject lines and header texts.

Marketing Wizzo Newsletter

Marketing Wizzo Newsletter

I’m a bit biased on this one.

The Marketing Wizzo Newsletter is a monthly newsletter that features content very helpful to anyone looking to learn more about marketing.

All the content is written in an extremely understandable manner. No need to get lost in the alphabet soup of marketing acronyms and gibberish.

The newsletter is centered around inbound marketing. It provides you with insight into the latest tips and tricks spanning a multitude of inbound marketing channels like email marketing, content marketing, and search engine optimization.

It also goes into the strategic implementation of best practices and how they can help you grow your business or improve your current marketing.

A key highlight of the Marketing Wizzo Newsletter is the swipe file section. In this section, you can see content taken directly from Tommy Cat Media’s swipe file.

You can find real-world examples of marketing from the best marketers around and world-famous brands. You can take these ideas from the swipe file, put your twist on them, and make them your own.

Finally, an underserved topic in most marketing newsletters is how to achieve a work-life balance

Unfortunately, marketing is a career path that can be difficult to separate from at the end of the day. Work sometimes piles over to the weekend and anxious thoughts can flood the mind for things like an email campaign launching.

Tommy Cat Media’s Marketing Wizzo Newsletter dedicates a section with content on how you can achieve a better work-life balance. You see tips on how to start your day or places you should go visit on your next vacation. The idea behind this section is to take your mind off marketing for a little bit and get you centered on the thing that matters, like your life outside of work.
